LuxConnect celebrates 20 years of building Luxembourg’s digital infrastructure

LuxConnect celebrated its 20th anniversary yesterday at Den Atelier, bringing together more than 500 guests, including customers, partners, employees and the company’s founders. The event marked two decades of developing the digital infrastructure that supports Luxembourg’s economy, while highlighting the projects that will shape its future.

A highlight of the evening was a disruptive video offering different perspectives on LuxConnect’s history. Combining archival footage and interviews with key figures who have contributed to the company’s development, the production revisited the milestones, decisions and people that have shaped LuxConnect since its creation in 2006.

Two decades of infrastructure development

Founded on the initiative of the Luxembourg government, LuxConnect was established to strengthen the country’s competitiveness and support the development of its digital ecosystem. Over the past 20 years, the company has built and expanded critical infrastructure to meet the growing connectivity and data security needs of businesses and institutions.

Its development has included the construction of four Data Centers across its Bettembourg and Bissen sites, as well as the deployment of a 2,000-kilometre national Optical Fiber network and country breakouts connecting Luxembourg to key European connectivity hubs.

LuxConnect has also expanded its activities through strategic partnerships and subsidiaries. LuxProvide was created to operate MeluXina, Luxembourg’s supercomputer, while Clarence, a joint venture with Proximus, develops sovereign cloud services. In collaboration with LuxEnergie, it established DataCenterEnergie to develop and operate energy solutions for its infrastructure. Partnerships such as Kiowatt have further contributed to its approach to energy efficiency and sustainability.

These developments reflect the evolution of LuxConnect’s activities in response to technological change and the growing importance of secure, reliable and sustainable digital infrastructure.

Sovereignty at the heart of the next chapter

As digital technologies become increasingly strategic for economic competitiveness, data protection and technological autonomy, digital sovereignty has become a guiding principle for LuxConnect.

“Over the past 20 years, LuxConnect has continuously evolved to meet Luxembourg’s changing infrastructure needs. Today, sovereignty has become our leitmotiv. Our responsibility is to continue developing secure, reliable and sustainable sovereign infrastructures that support our customers, strengthen our national digital ecosystem and contribute to the long-term competitiveness of Luxembourg’s economy. Our 20th anniversary is an opportunity to look ahead and prepare for the challenges and opportunities of the next decades.” said Paul Konsbruck, CEO of LuxConnect.

Several major projects are already underway or planned for the coming years. These include the construction of a new administrative building on the Bettembourg campus, bringing LuxConnect and its subsidiaries under one roof, as well as a multi-level car park to support the site’s development.

LuxConnect is also involved in the construction of the control center for IRIS², the European Union’s secure connectivity program. In parallel, the company is pursuing opportunities to improve the energy efficiency of its infrastructure, including a waste-heat recovery project at Bettembourg. The initiative aims to reuse heat generated by the Data Centers to help supply a new residential district being developed behind the site.

Together, these projects illustrate LuxConnect’s commitment to combining infrastructure development, technological sovereignty and sustainability.

Twenty years after its creation, LuxConnect pursues its mission of strengthening Luxembourg’s digital infrastructure and supporting the country’s position as a trusted European hub for connectivity and data security.
